2nd Seminar on Football for the Blind in Brno

13 February 2010, Brno, big gym at Vinařská 5

Visually impaired Czech futsal enthusiasts met again about two months later. Masaryk University organized the second follow-up seminar with more play as a part of the program. A total of nine participants from the Brno as well as Prague teams attended the seminar again. The seminar schedule was divided into four blocks which lasted about an hour each:

The first block was led by Lukáš Másilko, the Masaryk University team coach. The larger part of this training focused on dribbling and passing including the reception of the ball. Most of the participants learned as a new skill to zig-zag with the ball (frequent change of direction) and to lob-pass. At the end, the players tried shots from the spot.

The second block consisted of a match between two teams. The goalkeeper Martin Jelínek together with the guide Petra Belková led the quartet of Matěj Plch, Jiří Fenz, Petra Schejbalová and Tomáš Hromádka, who was substituted by Petra Lásková. The other team consisted of Zdeněk Barlok, Ladislav Muroň, Pavel Ondra and Jiří Sedláček. It was led by the goalkeeper Milan Duda and the guide Veronika Pazderková. Martin Jelínek's team won the match 4-0 while the spectators were captivated by Matěj Plch's productivity (he scored all four goals) and his coordination with Jiří Fenz.

The third block followed after a coffee break. It was led by Zdeněk Barlok, the Prague team coach. Zdeněk focused again on dribbling in combination with shooting on the go. At the end of his session, players tried taking free kicks.

The final block was dedicated to a match between the two teams. Jiří Fenz helped the Prague team and he did not spare his opponents and otherwise co-players from the Brno team. The Masaryk University team consisting of Matěj Plch, Ladislav Muroň, Pavel Ondra and Petra Lásková (goalkeeper Martin Jelínek, guide Veronika Pazderková) opened the score by Ladislav Muroň, who passed the opponent goalkeeper Milan Duda from a free kick.

The Prague team managed to answer quickly, however. Jiří Fenz took advantage of the opponent's defense players lack of attention and he left no chance to the goalkeeper Jelínek with his shot from a short distance. He could celebrate the equalization with his co-players Zdeněk Barlok, Jiří Sedláček, Petra Schejbalová, goalkeeper Milan Duda and guide Lukáš Pazderka. The Masaryk University team players were taken by surprise by the received goal and even more so when Jiří Fenz caught Martin Jelínek unprepared in the goal after his shot from an angle.

The Prague team was leading 2-1 and it substitued Jiří Sedláček with Tomáš Hromádka, while the Brno team pressed upon the "Prague" goalkeeper Milan Duda. Matěj Plch had many promising chances, however Milan Duda performed well in the goal and he caught a penalty shot by Ladislav Muroň for Tomáš Hromádka's hand in the penalty area. Five minutes later, the Prague players also had a penalty shot after Petra Lásková's hand. Zdeněk Barlok did not score from the penalty shot either. Jiří Fenz scored the last goal when he had plenty of time for an accurate shot to the post. Prague won 3-1.

The spirit of the Brno team lifted in the penalty shootout when it won in the ninth series by an accurate shot by Ladislav Muroň.

IBSA Futsal Coaching and Refereeing seminar

20-21 March 2010, Telki (near Budapest), Hungary

The Czech Football Association and the Czech Blind Sportsmen Association sent ten representatives to a blind football coaching and refereeing seminar on the weekend of 19-21 March 2010. Six coaches from Brno and two ones from Prague, one professional referee and one Prague team player participated in the seminar organized by the international association IBSA. The event took place in a beautiful environment of a sporthotel located in the Hungarian town Telki about 30 kms westward from Budapest.

Program

The seminar was divided into two days and the participants could choose whether they will take the part for referees or coaches. After an initial general meeting on Satruday morning, 20 March, where David Stirton introduced the IBSA association and blind football, the participants divided into two groups. Tony Larkin (head coach of the British national blind football team) led the more numerous group dealing with the principles of communication with the blind and their coaching. This seminar was designed for beginner coaches, so the Czech participants who had had several years of coaching experience didn't learn much new information. The other group of future referees was led by Elias Mastoras from a Greek school for visually impaired in Thessaloniki. He won the attention of all the participants with his explanation supported by many years of experience of an international referee. He didn't deliver a technical presentation about the rules of blind football, but he supported the facts with examples form his practice and demostrations. The end of the program was dedicated to a commented final match between China and Brazil at the 2008 Paralympic games in Beijing.

The theory-loaded Saturday program was followed by practical demonstrations in the local gym on Sunday. The groups of coaches and referees joined into one group which then watched the demostrations of the basic blind football skills performed by the most competent of them all, a British national blind football team player, Keryn Seal. Many blindfolded participants then tried how difficult it is to master the "rattling" ball without sight. The participants then moved to the outdoor pitch where there was a group of small Hungarian visually impaired goalball players of about 10 years of age.

Beginner coaches could practice what they had learned when they worked with the Hungarian boys on basic techniques such as dribbling, passing, reception and shooting. Finally, all participants took a class photograph and received certificates confirming their participation at the seminar. The Czech group also brought ten brand new balls and several blindfolds with quality exceeding that of the ones used up to that point. They established contacts with the international association IBSA and with other seminar participants. This event as a whole was a great success and it was very helpful.

3rd Seminar on Blind Football in Nymburk

14-16 May 2010, The Sport Centre Nymburk

A follow-up of the last seminar on blind football in Brno took place in Nymburk three months later. The weekend meeting was organized by the FC Prague coach and player Zdeněk Barlok with a financial support from the Czech Football Association. Nearly twenty participants met in the congenial environment of The Sport Centre Nymburk and participated in a series of five training units and one official match. Besides the representatives of Avoy MU Brno and FC Prague, Jarmil Moláček from Hradec Králové also participated in the seminar.

Program

The seminar began with an introductory meeting and a collective dinner on Friday, 14 May 2010. Later, participants met in a local bar to discuss the rules of blind football. Saturday was loaded with training.

The first training unit from 8.30 to 10am was lead by Petra Paďourová together with Zdeněk Barlok (FC Prague coaches) who focused on fitness, athletics and dribbling practice. Immediately after this, Lukáš Másilko (Avoy MU Brno coach) took the initiative and together with his colleagues he tried to inform players about other blind football techniques such as passing and controling the ball, dribbling with a change in direction and shooting from the spot and in movement. At the end of the morning program, the participants were divided into mixed teams and played a short friendly match.

After lunch, the third training unit was lead by Avoy MU Brno coaches Milan Duda and Martin Jelínek. They focused primarily on shooting and they included a number of fun exercises into the program where the players improved their shooting technique.

Saturday friendly match

The last saturday training unit consisted of the match. Both teams faced each other for the first time in a friendly match. Before the match began, players and coaches sat down together and they were explaing how blind football players can play the defence or attack in a formation using magnetic charts with Braille inscriptions to demonstrate it. The more experienced participants from Brno were giving their advice while the Prague participants were listening carefully.

Then, the Prague team put what they had learned into practice when they beat Avoy MU Brno 2-0 thanks to two goals by the forward Lukáš Valer, the best player on the pitch. He scored for the first time after his pressing in front of the goal when he changed the ball direction just before the goalkeeper Martin Jelínek.

He added the second goal after a wonderful shot from the left side of the pitch that went through the Avoy MU Brno goalkeeper. The Brno team players were suprised by attacking activities of the opponents and the victory of FC Prague was only fair.

Sunday match for the challenge cup

On Sunday morning, there was a "real" match for the Czech Blind Football Challenge Cup. The time of of exactly 2 x 25 minutes was measured, personal and team fouls were watched and all players did their best for their teams to win. It was an even game as both teams had chances but none of them was a hundred per cent goal chance. Brno players guarded Lukáš Valer who didn't get as much space as in the previous friendly.

In the second half-time, Zdeněk Barlok of FC Prague unfortunately collided with a kick board but he didn't suffer any serious injury besides an abrasion and a shock from the collision. Avoy MU Brno was pressing due to a series of corner kicks in the last five minutes of the match. However, forwards could not score and it seemed that the match would end up as a goalless draw and that it would have to be decided in a penalty shootout.

Still, a goal was scored half a minute before the end. The goalkeeper Martin Jelínek threw the ball to the kick board on the right and it was received by Jiří Fenz who managed to pass by the defender Jiří Sedláček and he was facing the goalkeeper Aleš Pavlíček on his own. He had enough time to stop the ball and set it up on his foot. Then he shot towards the right post and although Aleš Pavlíček was ready, he had no chance on the shot. There was no time left for the FC Prague players to react but still, Lukáš Valer had a chance but the ball slid off and the chance was over. Avoy MU Brno confirmed their victory 1-0 in the following penalty shootout where Jan Hegr was the only successful executioner and Aleš Pavlíček had no chance to save the shot towards the left post.

FC Praha lineup: goalkeeper Aleš Pavlíček, players Zdeněk Barlok, Tomáš Hromádka, Jiří Sedláček, Petra Schejbalová, Lukáš Valer, guide Petra Paďourová.

Avoy MU Brno lineup: goalkeeper Martin Jelínek, players Jiří Fenz, Jan Hegr, Petra Lásková, Kateřina Lingová, guide Jitka Graclíková.

Zdeněk Barlok handed over the challenge cup to the Brno team captain Jiří Fenz after lunch. The last part of the program consisted of a listening to a commented videorecording of the match Spain v. England, the final match of the 2007 European Championship. Lukáš Másilko talked as the commentator and all discussed questionable moments and goals shot by the Spanish team.

The following meeting and the second match for the challenge cup will take place in July 2010 at a summer workshop in Vyškovec where both teams will participate again.

Summer Blind Football Camp in Vyškovec

16-21 July 2010, Vyškovec, Uherské Hradiště county

The teams Avoy MU Brno and FC Prague met again two months after the successful weekend seminar in Nymburk, this time for a six day camp in Vyškovec near Starý Hrozenkov in the charming surroundings of the White Carpathians on the Czech and Slovak border. The accommodation was in the Valmont chalet, a secluded house near a wood in 750 meters above the sea level. The chalet offers rooms, a dining room with a bar and a terrace, as well as a small swimming pool and a futsal pitch which is situated a hundred meters away, so the players and coaches had everything they needed at hand.

Program of the camp

The program of the camp consisted of six training units, a free afternoon on Sunday, 18 July, the Three teams tournament and a match for the Czech Blind Football Challenge Cup. Trainings were mainly lead by the Brno team coaches who traditionally focused on a practice of the basic blind football technique such as dribbling, passing, controling the ball and shooting. There was also a fitness practice, exercises aimed at communication and tactical preparation in the form of explanation and practice of various formation types. Evenings were devoted to relaxation and free discussion. Players watched the match England v. Spain played at the 2007 European Championship commented by Lukáš Másilko on Saturday evening, 19 July. The last evening on Tuesday, 20 July, was devoted to a bonfire, singing and playing the guitar by excellent musicians Jiří Fenc and Veronika Pazderková as well as the free spirited Tomáš Hromádka.

Adventure game

The players were divided into three teams on Sunday, 18 July, and they took a walk in the surroundings of Vyškovec. On a five kilometers long rout, there were six checkpoints with various tasks for the teams:

  1. Shots on an empty goal from three different distances,
  2. flowers and objects recognition,
  3. movement of a whole team for five meters under the condition that only two hands and three feet can touch the ground at once,
  4. a blind football quiz,
  5. a trivia game in four areas based on yes/no questions,
  6. a treasure hunt with recorded instructions.

The teams gained a certain amount of points on each checkpoint which were summed up at the end and determined the teams' ranking. Petra Belková's team including Petra Lásková, Matěj Plch and Lukáš Valer won this even competition.

Three Teams Tournament

On the same day, there was a draw of the Three Teams Tournament which was planned on Monday afternoon, 19 June. Mr Jaroslav Pata, the head of the Czech Blind Sportsmen Association paid us a dear visit and discussed the possibilities of further development of blind footbal in the Czech Republic including an official establishment of a league or a national team with the leaders of both teams. The tournament as such was very even and it was only decided in the penalty shootout after the last match.

But first, the Valerians played the Plchians. The match was very charged, it was full of personal combats in which the members of both teams participated all the time. The Plchians scored the first goal in the first half-time after Matěj Plch's escape and exact shot. The Valerians' answer arrived at the end of the second half-time when Lukáš Valer scored. The match ended with a fair draw and the winner was decided in the penalty shootout. Matěj Plch was the only successful shooter so his team earned an extra point for the victory in the penalty shootout.

The second match between the Valerians and the Fenzians found it winner in the regular playtime. The decisive goal was preceded by a duel of the two captains who got into many chances which they could not score from. Jiří Fenz failed with the goalkeeper Martin Jelínek and Lukáš Valer was desperate from the goalkeeper Lukáš Pazderka's excellent saves. The goal was scored at the end of the second half-time after a corner kick by Tomáš Hromádka who made a pass to Lukáš Valer. He got out of an ideal shooting position with the ball, but his shot was touched by Petra Schejbalová who changed the ball's trajectory so that the goalkeeper Lukáš Pazderka could not respond to it.

The last match between the Fenzians and the Plchians was goalless, although mainly Matěj Plch had a plenty of chances. The penalty shootout needed to decide the important extra point. In case of victory, the Plchians would be the champions and their defeat would help the Valerians. There was no score in the first series and Jiří Fenz managed to overcome the goalkeeper Milan Duda in the fifth round. Matěj Plch had to score, but his attempt was saved by Lukáš Pazderka and thus the final ranking of the teams was decided:

  1. Valerians: Lukáš Valer, Katka Lingová, Martin Baláž, Tomáš Hromádka, goalkeeper Martin Jelínek, and guide Petra Paďourová earned 4 points for a lost match to the Plchians 1-2 after a penalty shootout (1 point) and a win in the match against the Fenzians (3 points);
  2. Plchians: Matěj Plch, Zdeněk Barlok, Jiří Sedláček, Jakub Starek, goalkeeper Milan Duda, and guide Petra Belková earned 3 points for the win 2-1 in the match against the Valerians after a penalty shootout (2 points) and the defeat 0-1 in the penalty shootout with the Fenzians (1 point);
  3. Fenzians: Jiří Fenz, Jan Hegr, Petra Schejbalová, Petra Lásková, Michal Rokusek, goalkeeper Lukáš Pazderka, and guide Jitka Graclíková earned 2 points for their victory in a penalty shootout after the match with the Plchians.

Match for the Czech Blind Football Challenge Cup

A match for the Czech Blind Football Challenge Cup was the highlight of the camp on Tuesday, 20 July. Both teams, Avoy MU Brno and FC Prague presented their best line-ups. The first half-time passed quickly and a hit post by Lukáš Valer after a surprising shot through the Brno defenders stands out.

In the second half-time, the duo of defenders Katka Lingová and Jan Hegr fulfilled their defense duties well and they gave no chance to the opponent. On the contrary, the Brno forwards raised and they started pressing on the opponent's goal with the guest-goalkeeper Milan Duda, who miraculously saved Matěj Plch's shot towards the right post; this forward also hit the post after one of his attacks. The ball got to the goalkeeper Duda after another attack by the Brno team, and Duda immediately tossed the ball forward to Lukáš Valer standing behind the opponent's defense. While Valer was receiving the pass, Jan Hegr came back to him. Hegr made further progress toward the goal impossible for Valer, who still managed to give an excellent shot towards the left post. The goalkeeper Martin Jelínek had no chance as he couldn't see through the defender Hegr.

Seven minutes before the end of the match, the received goal encouraged the Brno team to attack further and they cause a lot trouble to the FC Prague defense, but they didn't manage to score an equalizer. Thus the match for the Cup ended with FC Prague's victory 1-0. The trophy changed its owner and the Prague players, who celebrated the victory immensely, will enjoy it till at least the next seminar planned for the end of September and the beginning of October 2010.

Performance at the Camp Awards Ceremony

Three cups for performance at the camp were awarded in the evening after the match. Petra Schejbalová won the Fair Play cup for a model behaviour in all games played. Katka Lingová was announced the best defender for her precise defense job, as well as orientation and ability to direct the performance of her team, which were all appreciated by the coaches. Lukáš Valer earned the prize for the best forward who scored three goals and represented a permanent threat for the opponents' defenders.

International Tournament in Germany

2-3 October 2010, Stuttgart

Host: MTV Stuttgart 1843 e.V.

From 2nd to 3rd October there was an international tournament of blind footballers in Stuttgart and selected Czech players' team participated there too, with financial support from the Czech Union for Visually Impaired Sportsmen, the Czech-Moravian Football Association and the Masaryk University. French team from Metz didn't arrive, so except the Czech team there were three German clubs – MTV Stuttgart, LFC Berlin and Chemnitzer FC.

The Czech group consisted of eight players: Matěj Plch, Jan Hegr, Jiří Fenz a Katka Lingová from Avoy MU Brno team and Lukáš Valer, Petra Schejbalová, Zdeněk Barlok a Jiří Sedláček from FC Prague. Except them there were four coaches-assistants, Martin Jelínek (goalkeeper), Jitka Graclíková, Petra Paďourová (guides) and Milan Duda, who was the leader of the team and the head coach.

The opening ceremony was warm and the Czech Republic blind football deputies received an ovation for the fact, they were able to build the national team after nearly two years. At the first match they played against Chemnitzer FC who was the last but one team of the German Bundesleague without scoring a single goal. At this tournament, however Chemnitz borrowed one of the best shooters in the league, the Wirzburg team player. The first half ended 1-1, while Lukas Valer scored for the Czech team. In the second half the same player added two more goals and the completed his hattrick. Chemnitz was able to reduce the score difference to a single goal, the Czechs managed to win the match also thanks to the excellent saves of the goalie Martin Jelínek. The match ended 3-2 for the Czech players who could enjoy their first win. Then the host team from Stuttgart beat Berlin 4-0 although the defeated team's defense was very tough.

Czechs played its second match against MTV Stuttgart and Jan Hegr fouled an opponent in the penalty area during the first minute. Germans scored and started to "produce" another goals – the score stopped to 0-6 against Czechs in the first half. Although there were some changes in the Czech line-up during the second half, they were not able to do anything with the result. MTV Stuttgart, which was the first team of the German Bundesleague for last four years, shot ten goals during the game and the match ended 0-10 against Czechs. In the following match there was a square battle between LFC Berlin and Chemnitzer FC. The Berlin team won 2-1. In the evening, all the tournament's participants gathered for a dinner at a local Greek restaurant, and after a brief stop at the hotel the Czech team attended a meeting with German players at the school for visually impaired students. There was a talk with Alexander Fangmann (MTV Stuttgart team player and one of the organizers of the tournament) about the next friendly match between the Czech Republic and Germany which is planned for spring 2011. Both sides also discussed the idea of two Czech clubs' participation in the Bundesleague since 2012.

On Sunday 3rd, there were the last two games. The Czech Republic team played against LFC Berlin, which ended third in the Bundesleague last season. Unfortunately during the first half the Czechs did not play very well because the Berliners have come up with an aggressive and offensive tactics, which the Czechs did not expect and lost the first part of the game 0-3. After the break, the line-up was changed and Lukas Valer hit a post at first and then did not even score from a penalty. On the other side Berlin added one more goal from the breakaway and the Czechs were defeated 0-4. In the last match of the tournament the host from Stuttgart beat his opponent only 4-1 due to the fact the Chemnitz team received a help from another Stuttgart team players, who are not the members of the Stuttgart line-up in regular.

At the closing ceremony, the Czech Republic won the bronze medal, the fair play award and Lukas Valer was introduced as the best player of the tournament. The weekend in Stuttgart ended very positively for the Czech blind football. But a lot of work has to be done to make our team prepared for the matches against the teams participating in the European Championships. Another blind football camp is needed to build the national team, so the players can get used to each other and the line-up could be finalised. The main goal is to participate in the European Championship next year.

4th Seminar on Blind Football in Brno

6-7 November 2010, Brno

Big gym at 5 Vinařská St. or indoor sports hall in Bohunice campus

David Mycock, a teacher at the University of Worcester kindly accepted an invitation from Masaryk University staff and came to Brno for a week. He led another, fourth seminar of blind football which took place in Brno this time and was attended by both Czech teams, FC Prague and Avoy MU Brno, on the weekend from 6 to 7 November 2010. Both days of the seminar focused on training as well as matches for Czech Blind Football Challenge Cup.

The saturday meeting was shorter than expected due to administrative problems with the gym reservation at Vinařská St. Participants of the seminar had a one hour training led by David Mycock focused on improvement in communication. All players warmed up after several simple games so that they could play in the first match for the Challenge Cup. While the cup holder, the team FC Prague, had a slow start, the team Avoy MU Brno entered the game with spirit and were more dangerous in the first halftime. Matěj Plch had several chances and he could celebrate the first leading goal in the 9th minute of the game. After a pass from Jiří Fenz, Matěj took advantage of the opponent's defence and he took an unexpected shot from an angle. The hidden ball landed in the goal garded by Tomáš Bukovský, a visiting goalkeeper in FC Prague, and passed in between his legs. The Brno players further dominated the pace of the game and their defence players did not let Prague's forward Lukáš Valer break through. After the interval the game was equal and both teams could take chance from free kicks. When Brno seemed about to win, Martin Jelínek made a mistake. He saved Lukáš Valer's swift shot from imminent proximity from the goal but he was standing outside the goalkeeper's area. Lukáš Valer scored from the penalty shot and equalized to the final draw 1-1 in the last second of the match.

The seminar continued on Sunday, this time in indoor sports hall at the campus in Brno – Bohunice. David Mycock opened the program again and focused on shooting and on quick receiving. But players were impatient already and they spoiled for the decisive match for the Challenge Cup. The draw from Saturday was indecisive and it was the Sunday match that was about to decide. The match was similar to the one from the day before. The Brno team were better from the whistle at the beginning and they scored very quickly. At 1:16, Matěj Plch scored again from a free kick after the pass of Jiří Fenz. The ball touched Lukáš Valer and changed its trajectory. Tomáš Bukovský was taken by surprise and could not respond because he was moving to the other side. FC Prague players had a hard time dealing with the beginning of the match and their performance was nervous and even Lukáš Valer couldn't score for a long time. His shots were headed outside of the goal. But after the interval, the cup holders pushed harder. The Brno defense made of Jan Hegr and Katka Lingová resisted the pressure at the cost of fouls and were losing strength. Five minutes before the end, Aleš Moravec (Avoy MU Brno) commited a foul against Lukáš Valer near Martin Jelínek's goal. As it was the fourth team foul, a penalty shot from 8 metres was ordered. Lukáš Valer himself executed the kick, but his shot toward the side pole was saved by the fantastic Martin Jelínek. The two forwards Barlok and Valer then tried to score with no effect and paradoxically, the biggest chance of FC Prague came again in the very ending of the match. Five seconds before the end, Lukáš Valer got the ball and was running along against Avoy MU Brno's goalkeeper. He nevertheless didn't hit the ball properly in his good position and he missed the goal. After the exciting second half, Avoy MU Brno won 1-0 and they reclaimed the Challenge Cup.

FC Prague line-up: goalkeeper Tomáš Bukovský, players: Zdeněk Barlok, Tomáš Hromádka, Ondřej Kodet, Petra Schejbalová, Jiří Sedláček, Lukáš Valer, guides: Kateřina Kmentová (Saturday), Petra Paďourová (Sunday), coach: Michal Rokusek.

Avoy MU Brno line-up: goalkeeper Martin Jelínek, players: Jiří Fenz, Jan Hegr, Katka Lingová, Aleš Moravec, Pavel Ondra, Matěj Plch, guide: Jitka Graclíková, coach: Lukáš Pazderka.

Goals by: Plch 2 (Avoy MU Brno) – Valer 1 (FC Prague).
