Second year of the League
In 2012, the Czech Futsal League for the Blind entered its second year. Again, only two teams participated: Avoy MU Brno (the defending champion from 2011) and BSC Prague. The two teams met five times in total, the winner this time was the Prague team. In addition to the Czech Association of Visually Impaired Athletes, the league was also supported by the Czech-Moravian Football Association, which delegated a professional referee to each match, whose salary and travel expenses were covered. We offer an overview of match dates, results and goal scorers:

The 2012 Season Opens with the First League Match
31 March 2012, Brno
Both the teams met again after more than four months. The team from Brno, defending their title of league champions, had to do without their number one goalkeeper Martin Jelínek, who was in treatment for an injured knee. He was substituted by Tomáš Bukovský. BFC Prague has seen many changes over the past months, especially on the coach posts, with the additions of the goalkeeper Ondřej Kričfaluši, the guide Katka Oplová and coach Jiří Kotrč. Michal Rokůsek moved to the position of defense and this match also saw the return of the old-new captain Zdeněk Barlok, who was off after a heart operation. Unlike the most recent match in Brno, this time BSC Prague arrived complete and it showed.
At the start of the match, Lukáš Valer from BSC Prague attempted to shoot at the goal several times, but was always blocked by Brno's defense. The first change in the score came in the 17th minute, as Tomáš Hromádka, after a corner kick, passed the ball to Valer, who subsequently managed to surprise the goalkeeper Tomáš Bukovský by a shot from a long distance. Matěj Plch attempted to retaliate, but did not manage to score. Two minutes before the end of the first half Valer slipped past the defense of Brno's team and scored another goal for BSC Prague.
The second half brought many scoring chances and interesting moments. The most active player in challenging Prague's defense was Matěj Plch, who, however, had trouble scoring. After Rokůsek's foul a penalty kick from the distance of seven metres was ordered. Plch, executing the penalty kick, played the ball against a goalpost. Several minutes after that, Rokůsek committed another foul and this time the penalty kick was executed by Jan Mrázek. His attempt was marred by the goalkeeper Kričfaluši, who managed to catch the ball. Avoy MU Brno intensified their pressure at this point, making Prague's defense busy. After Prague's goalkeeper's overstepping of the goal area the referee ordered another penalty kick, again played by Mrázek. Unfortunately for Avoy, he missed the goal and there was no change in the score. Plch managed to overpower Prague's goalkeeper at last, and scored. There was not much time left to even up the score, but Brno's players still moved to strike and tried to get the ball into a scoring position. However, Valer managed to get control of the ball and scored into Bukovský's goal. His hattrick secured a 1−3 victory for BSC Prague.

International blind football tournament in Düren
4 - 6 May 2012, Düren (Germany)
The Avoy MU Brno accepted an invitation for the international blind football tournament which was held by the occasion of the opening of a new blind football pitch at the School for Visually Impaired in Düren. Apart from us, another three teams were supposed to attend the tournament, namely the Saint-Mandé blind football team from France, the German blind football league champion from Stuttgart and the fifth team of German blind football league from Cologne. Unfortunately, the MTV Stuttgart had to cancel their participation due to a number of injuries suffered by their players. They were replaced by Dortmund’s blind football team at the last moment, so the tournament could take place as planned.
It took the Czech players almost 12 hours to get to Düren. Just behind Frankfurt, they faced a “kindly” surprise prepared by the Germans in the form of heavy rains, and the bleak weather lasted for the whole weekend. The Brno players arrived at the venue on Friday 4 May around 10 pm and were welcomed by the best guide they could get, i.e. Thomas Schäfer, a social worker from the local School for Visually Impaired
The tournament was scheduled to start on Saturday afternoon, so everybody had enough time for tactical preparation and to recover from the demanding journey. The tournament was opened by a match between German teams from Cologne and Dortmund so the Czech guys could see their qualities. The exciting match was won by Cologne: Michael Wahl scored the only goal of the match. The second match was Brno against the French team of Saint-Mandé. The French team occupies the second place in the French blind football league and three French internationals are its members. There is no need to mention that the French are the latest champions of Europe in blind football as well. It is no surprise then that the Brno team lost 0−4, which is still a respectable result.
After this defeat, the Brno guys enjoyed their five minutes of break and right after that they had to play another match against the German team of Dortmund which ended in a draw 0−0 so the Brno team opened its way to the semifinals scheduled for Sunday. The interesting fact in this match was that Dortmund started to play only with three players instead of four so the Czech team had to accept this new condition too. The biggest round of applause was given to the Czech goalkeeper Martin Jelínek, who had returned to the team after a short break caused by an injury. The last match of the day was played between Saint Mandé and Cologne, which was won 2:0 by the French. It is important to highlight that not only the Czech guys were stunned by the perfect tactics and style of play of the French. It was pleasure to watch.
Saturday evening was dedicated to a dinner party with a lot of champagne, dance and joy. On Sunday morning, the Brno players were in the best mood to fight for the bronze medal. They fought more than bravely but lost to Cologne 2−0 in the end. This result moved the Brno team to the fourth place in the tournament and Saint-Mandé played against Cologne in the final. This unbelievably attractive match with several lost penalty kicks on the French side ended by penalty kicks. The winning penalty was scored by Michael Wahl and Cologne won the tournament.
The Avoy MU Brno would like to thank Christopher Granath from the organizing team for the invitation, as well as Thomas Schäfer for warmest welcome, accommodation and everything he has done for the Czech blind football team. Special thanks go to the famous international expert Dick Lunenborg, who came from nearby Holland to give moral support the Czech team. The biggest thankyou goes to the players, goalkeeper, coach, assistants, and drivers who managed to get all of them home safely on Sunday midnight despite unfavourable weather conditions.
Avoy MU Brno line up: goalkeeper Martin Jelínek, players: Jiří Fenz, Jan Hegr, Katka Lingová, Aleš Moravec, Jan Mrázek, Pavel Ondra, Matěj Plch, guide: Jitka Graclíková, coach: Tomáš Bukovský.

Blind Football League, Round 2
8 May 2012, Březíněves, Prague
The second round of the season 2012 was held in Březíněves near Prague at the home pitch of BFC Prague. Both teams had the opportunity to improve their play at the weekend when Avoy MU Brno attended an international tournament in Duren, Germany and BFC Prague invited a blind football team from Berlin in Germany for a friendly match. The Avoy MU Brno could again rely on their goalkeeper Martin Jelínek who recovered from an injury, unfortunately they had to get along without their former forward, Matěj Plch, who recently ended his carrier due to long-term health problems. This fact was easy to notice – only a few chances were seen in front of Prague’s goal.
But first things first. The match was kicked off on a sunny afternoon at 1:45 pm. It was refereed by Lukáš Másilko together with Jan Kresta, an experienced referee of the first and second Czech Football League with plenty of practice abroad. The Prague players dominated the match mostly. Lukáš Valer, Michal Rokůsek and Zdeněk Barlok formed the offensive line. The Avoy MU Brno defence was holding out thanks to the strong three-men defensive line as well as our dependable goalkeeper Martin Jelínek. He saved many shots and a very dangerous offensive action by Zdeněk Barlok who firmly followed the ball up to the border of goalmouth and from there tried to kick it behind the goalkeeper’s back. On the other side of the pitch, it was mainly Jan Mrázek who tried to endanger Prague’s goalkeeper, although his attacks were not too dangerous.
The only goal of the match was scored in the 9th minute of the second half. The aggressive Lukáš Valer reached the penalty area with a rebounded ball missed by Brno defenders. Then he moved closer to the goal and shot through the defenders. His shot was not too strong but as he stood close to the goalmouth, the ball hit the left post and ended up in the Avoy MU Brno net. The visiting team tried to equalize immediately after this goal but met with opposition of the Prague team and especially Lukáš Valer kept the Brno team defense very busy. But Brno’s forward Jan Mrázek did have a really good chance to score after all. He got the ball into the opponent’s penalty area and managed to strike a dangerous shot to the right post of the Prague team’s goal. Prague’s goalkeeper Ondřej Kričfaluši pushed the ball away from the goal by a brave jump and saved Prague its one-goal lead. After this chance, no more exciting moments were seen in front of the Prague team’s goal. Avoy MU Brno seemed to be drained of energy as a result of the constant need to defend their goal from Lukáš Valer and did not manage to endanger the opponent’s goal anymore.
After dominating the whole match, the BFC Prague team won again and the result 1:0 moved them closer to winning the league: they have won twice whilst the Brno team has not obtained a single point yet. The next match is scheduled for June 10 and will take place in Ostrava. Delegates of both teams believe that they will manage to get more blind people interested in blind football.
BFC Praha line-up: Goalkeeper Ondřej Kričfaluši, players: David Berenreiter, Zdeněk Barlok, Tomáš Hromádka, Radek Kratochvíl, Michal Rokůsek, Jiří Sedláček, Petra Schejbalová, Lukáš Valer, guides: Katka Oplová, Petra Paďourová, couch: Jiří Kotrč.
Avoy MU Brno line-up: Goalkeeper Martin Jelínek, players: Jiří Fenz, Jan Hegr, Katka Lingová, Aleš Moravec, Jan Mrázek, Martina Mrázková, Pavel Ondra, guide: Jitka Graclíková, coach: Tomáš Bukovský.

Blind Football League, Round 3
10 June 2012, Ostrava
Another encounter between the Brno and Prague teams took place in Ostrava on a perfectly prepared field of J. Šoupal Elementary School. It was organized by Mikuláš Ďurko from Ostrava, who is the chair of the futsal sub-committee of the Czech Sports Organization for Physically Disabled. The main reason for playing the match in Ostrava was to present blind football to the blind in the region and incite them to establish another Czech team.
Despite the rain in most of the country, the match started in agreeable weather at 12pm. Both teams began the match with full line-ups and the first half-time was balanced. The Prague shooter Lukáš Valer was the first to threat to score when he checked Martin Jelínek’s attention with a shot from the left hand side. Brno replied shortly after when Jan Mrázek shot from behind the defence line and his bullet hit the left post of BFC Prague. The ringing iron warned Prague players that it won’t be easy this day. Lukáš Valer and Zdeněk Barlok responded soon. Barlok was dribbling the ball with his typical doggedness and found himself in front of the opponent’s goalie, however he didn’t manage to place the shot in the goal and sent it about a foot off the three poles.
In the second half-time, BFC Prague players had the upper hand. Valer directed attacking manoeuvres in front of the opponent’s goal and he got twice at close range to the goalie Lukáš Jelínek. But Jelínek was the hero of the match, when he stretched on the goal line both times and stopped the shots with his body. It was even more difficult for Prague forwards, because Brno defenders Hegr and Lingová often got help from one forward. The Brno penalty area was often so full that nothing could pass through, not even Lukáš Valer. Before the end of the match, Jan Mrázek got into another super-chance when he had the luxury of several seconds to receive the ball and prepare a hard shot at the Prague goalie. Unfortunately it was a side shot and Ondřej Kričfaluši blocked it. Then cloud storms were gathering above the field, signalling dramatic moments on the Avoy MU Brno half-pitch. Valer wanted to decide the match and he began to move in spirals. This way, he got easily behind Brno defenders. He sent a couple of poisonous shots at the opponent’s goal in the last two minutes of the match, but Jelínek always managed to block them.
The final score of the match was 0—0 and both teams gained a point. The penalty shootout for another point followed in a heavy rain. In the first round, Barlok aimed at the right hand post, but Jelínek blocked his shot. In the second round, Fenz celebrated when Kričfaluši couldn’t save his lifted shot. The next shooter was Valer, but he couldn’t break his bad luck when his good shot ended on the right hand post. In the last series, neither Jan Hegr nor Jiří Sedláček succeeded. Brno won the penalty shootout thanks to outstanding Jelínek and gained the second point for winning the match 1—0 in the penalty shootout.
BFC Praha line-up: goalkeeper Ondřej Kričfaluši, players: David Berenreiter, Zdeněk Barlok, Tomáš Hromádka, Radek Kratochvíl, Michal Rokůsek, Jiří Sedláček, Petra Schejbalová, Lukáš Valer, guide: Katka Oplová, coach: Jiří Kotrč.

Summer Camp in Bučovice
26–29 July 2012, Bučovice
The blind football summer camp was organized this year again in the time-proven setting of Bučovice. The players of Avoy MU Brno trained this time only at the outdoor pitch of ZŠ Školní 710, we were staying at the Arkáda Hotel and meals were provided by Vinárna u Šembery. Unlike last year, this camp was attended only by the team from Brno, from which six players and five coaches arrived.
In four days the players underwent six training units, each of which was aimed at improving the skills needed and developing game tactics. The final training was conceived as a competition, which was won by Jan Mrázek. The weather was very favourable. Thanks to the tropical heat we were able to visit the local pool. The last training session was blighted by a slight rain, but the players could easily withstand it thanks to being equipped with tracksuits purchased with the help of the donation by the Czech Radio Foundation from the charitable collection "Světluška".

The first international experience of the Czech national blind football team
9-12 August 2012, Lille (France)
As the Paralympics is comming very soon, the French national team of B1s invited the newly formed Czech national team for “blind friendly internationals” for two August days to French town Lille. The Czech national team for the first time had the opportunity to play against the european champions. The first game on Friday ended with a result 0:6 (Gael Riviere scored once, Martin Bacon three times and Frederic Villereux two times) and the second game on Saturday resulted 0:5 (Abderhim Maya scored once, David Labarre once and Frederic Villereux three times), both matches were won by the French.
The fact that there are just two Czech teams - AVOY MU Brno and BFC Praha results in very limited opportunities for the Czech blind players to play and improve their skills and abilities, therefore the teams are really eager to get experience abroad. Czech players had the opportunity to play three times in Germany (Stuttgart and Düren) and once in the UK in Worcester.
Czechs are looking forward to many activities in the nearest future, the first is the Paralympics in September 2012 in London - this year just as spectators, and in November 2012 there is a tournament in Margburg (Germany) supported by Czech blind sportsmen association. We hope for participating in the European championship next year.
Many thanks goes to the Czech blind sportsmen association, the Handi sport Fédération Française, the Czech football association, David Mycock and Keryn Seal from the University of Worcester, Alexander Fangmann and Ulrich Pfisterer from Stuttgart and at the end Gabriel Mayr who was the first impulse for the inception of blind football in the Czech republic in June 2008.

Blind Football League Round 4 in Prague – Březiněves
15 September 2012, Praha – Březiněves
On Saturday, September 15, spectators and fans assembled in Prague − Březiněves to watch what might have been one of the most beautiful matches in both 2011 and 2012. The team from Brno arrived without their defense players, Hegr and Lingová, and had only five players in the field. Both Pavel Ondra and Martina Mrázková played in the defense for the first time.
BSC Prague arrived with all their players, but the disadvantaged team from Brno still managed to dominate the field for a long time. Lukáš Valer tried to score several times, but his aim was somewhat off, not really challenging Brno’s Martin Jelínek. Jan Mrázek was faring much better with the defense of BSC Prague, driving Prague's goalkeeper Ondřej Kričfaluši mad with his easy passes through the defense of Berenreiter and Schejbalová. He scored the first goal in the 23rd minute, passing between the defense players and scoring at the left post. The goal motivated Lukáš Valer to have another try at scoring, and his "voy" being shouted too late led to a foul on Valer by Jirka Fenz. Later Valer waited for the defense to open and shot an impossible-to-catch goal.
Unfortunately for the Brno team, BSC Prague were able to make use of the short-term lack of attention exhibited by the defense right after the start of the second half. Zdeněk Barlok passed the ball to Valer, effectively ridding him of both the strikers, Valer avoided the defense of Ondra and Fenz and scored an easy goal, which put his team in a 2:1 lead. The rest of the match consisted of Brno's team's vain attempts to beat Prague's defense. Brno's strikers, having had to play the entire match, were at a disadvantage and unable to score more goals. It was much easier for Lukáš Valer, however, and he scored two more goals, making the match a 4−1 win for BSC Prague. This victory ensures the league cup for BSC Prague.
BSC Praha line-up: goalkeeper Ondřej Kričfaluši, players: David Berenreiter, Zdeněk Barlok, Tomáš Hromádka, Jiří Sedláček, Petra Schejbalová, Lukáš Valer, guides: Petra Paďourová, Katka Oplová, coach: Jiří Kotrč.

Blind Football League, Round 5
7 October 2012, Brno, ZŠ Bednářova 28
The match was affected by bad weather this time, which caused most of the spectators to stay home. We are, however, thankful to the few faithful fans, who came out even though they had to hide under umbrellas in the cold. The already certain to-be-winners of this year’s league, BSC Prague, were only able to bring five players to the field, and were further disadvantaged by the traffic situation on the D1 highway, which caused a delay and the subsequent shortening of the play time to two 25-minute blocks. Avoy MU Brno arrived with their complete lineup of players, with even Matěj Plch (absent from three previous matches) playing again.
The match offered fewer interesting situation than the previous one due to the slippery terrain of the pitch and the fierce rain, which severely impaired the acoustics of the match. The first half was devoid of goals, although there were attempts by both BSC Prague players (Lukáš Valer, prevented from scoring by the Brno goalkeeper Martin Jelínek) and players from Brno (Jan Mrázek and Matěj Plch, attempting to score against Prague’s goalkeeper Ondřej Kričfaluši). Due to the reliable defence on both sides there were not too many scoring chances.
Five minutes into the second half, Lukáš Valer managed to secure a defence-free position for scoring, but he was prevented by Martin Jelínek. However, as the goalkeeper reached beyond the goal area while performing this action, the referee ordered a penalty kick, which resulted in a goal for BSC Prague. All efforts by the Brno team to settle the score were ultimately in vain due to the defence of the opposing team. The rain reached an unbearable intensity in the final minutes of the match, further worsening the acoustics so that all the coaches were mostly concerned for the players’ health. Thankfully there were no accidents. The match ended with Avoy MU Brno losing 0−1 to BSC Prague.
After the match ended, the players relocated indoors and representatives of the Brno team handed their opponents the trophy for the 2012 league winner. Next match will be played as a part of the tournament in Marburg, Germany at the beginning of November.
Avoy MU brno line-up: goalkeeper Martin Jelínek, players: Jiří Fenz, Jan Hegr, Katka Lingová, Aleš Moravec, Jan Mrázek, Martina Mrázková, Pavel Ondra, Matěj Plch, guide: Jitka Graclíková, coach: Tomáš Bukovský.
BSC Praha line-up: goalkeeper Ondřej Kričfaluši, players: Zdeněk Barlok, Michal Rokůsek, Jiří Sedláček, Petra Schejbalová, Lukáš Valer, guide: Katka Oplová, coach: Jiří Kotrč.

Eins-Energie Cup
17 November 2012, Chemnitz (Germany)
On the first weekend of November, the team Avoy MU Brno was invited to participate in a tournament in Marburg, Germany. However, three days before the planned departure, the organizers cancelled the event. For this reason, Brno’s team was happy to accept the offer to participate in the “Eins-Energie-Cup” in Chemnitz, Germany, two weeks later. Although the invitation came just three days before the event started, Avoy MU Brno’s success has demonstrated that it was worth it.
The tournament took place on 17 November 2012 on the premises of Berufsbildungwerk Centre in Chemnitz and the participants were three German teams – FC St. Pauli (seventh in the German league), FC Chemnitzer (fifth) and VSV Würzburg – and Avoy MU Brno from the Czech Republic. As mentioned above, it was a short notice, so the team had to do without their experienced players such as Matěj Plch, Kateřina Hegrová and Jan Hegr. Financially supported by Masaryk University, the following enthusiasts from Brno hit the road: Jan Mrázek, Martina Mrázková, Pavel Ondra, Aleš Moravec and Jiří Fenz, accompanied by the flawless goalkeeper Tomáš Bukovský, coach Ondřej Banovský, navigator behind the goal Jitka Graclíková and assistant Jiří Gigimov.
After the opening ceremony, the tournament began with a match between FC Chemnitzer and FC St. Pauli; it was a draw 1-1. In the second match, Avoy MU Brno was pitted against VSV Würzburg. Thanks to the vehemence of the forward Jan Mrázek and the perfect work in the defence, Brno’s team started the tournament by winning 2-0. No team scored in the third match, FC Chemnitzer vs. VSV Würzburg, or in the fourth one, Avoy MU Brno vs. FC St. Pauli. Without a chance to rest, the players of FC St. Pauli excelled in the next match against VSV Würzburg, which they won 2-0. In the last match of the tournament, the guys from Brno managed to keep their good form and did not let themselves become discouraged by FC Chemnitzer’s tough offensive play: when the final whistle was blown, the score was 0-0.
The tournament was therefore won by FC St. Pauli from Hamburg. Avoy MU Brno brought home silver medals; bronze medals went to the home team, and VSV Würzburg finished in fourth place.
To conclude with, big thanks go to everybody who changed their plans for the weekend at a very short notice and was not afraid to travel to Germany. We would also like to thank the organizers for inviting us. Last but not least, we thank Vlastimil Bukovský, who helped Brno’s team by financing their new dresses that finally brought luck to our players.
